Student Matters

Student Scholarship Program

The IPPW International Steering Group recognizes that an injection of new talent is essential to the vitality of the field. To facilitate participation in the workshop, a student scholarship program has been created.

U.S. and European Student Scholarship Program: For practical reasons, the US and European programs are administered separately with separate financing, application forms, and financing.

U.S. student scholarship application
European student scholarship application

Scholarships for U.S. funds will be administered through Georgia Tech with Dr. Robert Braun chairing the U.S. student scholarship program.

Scholarships for European students will be administered through Dr. Jean-Pierre Lebreton, chairing the European student scholarship program.

The level of support will depend on a number of factors, the main one being the presentation by the student of a paper or a poster of direct relevance to the workshop. In addition, students using their formal university identification are entitled to a student discount on registration fees.

Selection Process:
Student applications will be reviewed and the committee will then select applications based in large part on advisor recommendations and available funds.

Other Student Matters

  1. Student Poster Competition: All student posters will be judged (taking into account all aspects of the work including importance of research to the field, and presentation) by the International Steering Committee. The winning poster will be awarded a special commemorative plaque. The two runners-up will also receive prizes. The prizes will be awarded at the banquet.

  2. Student Discount: Students using their formal university identification are entitled to a student discount on registration fees.

  3. Tour of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory: a 2-hour tour is being organized for students interested in touring the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. JPL was established by the California Institute of Technology in the 1930s. America's first satellite, Explorer 1, was created at JPL. Today missions like the comet-chasing spacecraft Stardust bring interstellar dust home, while the flagship explorer Cassini loops around Saturn and the haze-shrouded Titan. The twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity carry on their mission across the surface of Mars and the other twin spacecraft, the Voyagers are exploring the edge of our solar system.

To sign up for this tour, read the important information below.

JPL Tour Information:
JPL tours require advance reservations. For the IPPW conference, a special tour is being arranged for students who register for the conference. For all non U.S. students, at least three weeks advance notice is needed to process the required paperwork.

JPL requires that all U.S. citizens, 18 years of age or older, present official, government issued photo identification (driver's license or passport) before being allowed entry.

All non-U.S. Citizens 18 years of age or older must present a passport or resident visa (green card) before being allowed entry. Individuals without proper identification will not be admitted to the Laboratory. Security-related policies have greatly increased the processing time needed. All non-U.S. students must let us know at least three weeks in advance so we can process the visitor request.

Please be advised that tours involve a considerable amount of walking and stair climbing. Wheelchair access can be accommodated with advance notice, however wheelchairs cannot be provided. Don't forget to dress for the weather; the tour will proceed rain or shine.
